In 2008 the well known owl rehabilitation centre in Tulbagh closed and there was nowhere left in the area to take care of rescued birds.
We have been involved with wildlife rescue for many years and was suddenly getting a lot of calls asking for help with rescued birds. We were keen to help but had nowhere really suitable to care for any birds and animals brought to us.
We discussed this with the Speirs who were enthusiastic about the idea of starting a small rehabilitation centre and gave us permission to put up some flight cages on their land. The Vets in Ceres agreed to assist us should we require professional help.
Cape Nature was consulted, a management plan drawn up and an application made for a permit. In January 2009 we were granted a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation permit and we began the construction of a very small wildlife rescue / rehab centre.
Cape Nature officials approved our facilities and visit us on a regular basis. Breede Valley SPCA inspectors visited our centre and submitted a report to National SPCA head office and we have subsequently been given National SPCA accreditation. The Breede Valley SPCA does not have facilities for wildlife care so we are able to assist them by taking any wild animals and birds they receive.
