Tulbagh is situated 120km north of Cape Town
and lies at the northern edge of the beautiful fertile Breede
River Valley. It is surrounded by three mountain ranges - the
Obiqua mountains to the west - the Winterhoek range to the North
and the Witzenberg to the east. During the winter months these
mountains are often covered in snow. The Great Winterhoek is
a challenge to serious hikers.
The town was established in 1743 when the
first church was built. The area was extensively damaged in the
1969 earthquake and many of the old buildings were almost destroyed.
Every building in the present Church Street was restored to its
original form and were all declared National Monuments. There
are five museums in and around Tulbagh.
Activities in the area include mountain
biking, hiking, walking, horseriding, fishing, cellar tours,
birding as well as 4 X 4 trails.
